A Quiet Place
Release date: April 6, 2018 (USA)
Director: John Krasinski
Screenplay: John Krasinski, Scott Beck, Bryan Woods
Over three months in 2020, most of Earth’s human population has been wiped out by sightless creatures with hypersensitive hearing known as the “Death Angels.” Boasting considerable size, speed and a seemingly impenetrable armored shell, they use their auditory acuity to locate and attack anything that makes noise. The Abbott family — husband Lee, wife Evelyn, congenitally deaf daughter Regan, and sons Marcus and Beau — silently scavenge for supplies in the deserted town. Their family, skilled in American Sign Language, must nonetheless be vigilant for accidental noise. Four-year-old Beau is drawn to a battery-operated space shuttle toy, but his older family members must leap to prevent him making sound that would attract the creatures. Regan returns the toy to Beau, who unbeknownst to her has also taken the batteries his father removed. Beau activates the shuttle when the family is walking home through the woods, near a bridge. Its noise makes him an instant target for a nearby creature, and he is swiftly killed.

With her new confidence comes overconfidence, and even the tendency to treat the ‘less genetically fortunate’ in the same dismissive way that people used to treat her. Eventually Renee believes the spell has been lifted – and finally realizes that when she thought she was ugly, she may have been the most beautiful, and when she believed she was beautiful, she had started to turn a bit ugly. She learns that true beauty is not skin deep. I Feel Pretty is both written and directed by filmmakers Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein, both screenwriters of Never Been Kissed, He’s Just Not That Into You, Valentine’s Day, The Vow, making their feature directorial debut.
